About Dental Bonding

Dental Bonding can repair cracks and chips that can damage both your smile and your tooth’s health.
Why should I have bonding?

You should consider bonding if you don’t like the look of your teeth and it affects your confidence. This may be because you have a gap between your teeth at the front, or your tooth or teeth are:

Cracked – Cracked teeth can be caused by people who grind their teeth, have large fillings or clench their teeth.

Chipped – A tooth can be chipped by eating hard food, or by a fall, or by a blow to the mouth. Sometimes a tooth with a large cavity chip because it isn’t strong enough to support the remaining tooth

Decayed – Poor dental hygiene, too much sugar, smoking, and alcohol can cause a buildup of plaque and destroy tooth enamel.

Discolored – Teeth discolor with age, from drinking liquids or eating foods that stain the teeth, or because your tooth was damaged by a knock from a fall or a sporting accident.

Need a better contour – If your teeth are uneven or not aligned properly, you might want to consider bonding to give your teeth a better contour to improve your appearance.

Need lengthening – Bonding can also be used to lengthen your teeth if they are uneven or worn down.

What is the procedure?
Normally you will not require an anesthetic as the procedure isn’t at all painful. Your dentist will first apply a conditioning liquid and rub your tooth or teeth to make the surface rough. (This helps the resin to stay on your tooth). Then the resin, which will have been matched to your tooth color will be applied. The resin will be smoothed and molded into shape. It is dried with a laser and then finished off once it has hardened to make it perfect.
Does it take long?
Dental bonding is extremely fast. You can have done in your lunch hour, as it normally takes between 30 and 60 minutes to complete the procedure. Obviously, it will take longer if you are having more than one tooth bonded.
How long does bonding last?
As long as you look after your teeth, bonding can last for up to ten years. Be careful when you eat hard foods that might crack the material such as candy or nuts and watch the amount of tea and red wine you drink, as the material will stain over time.
Are there any other solutions I should think about?
You could have veneers or crowns, but these procedures can’t be done in a single visit and therefore aren’t as convenient. They also mean the removal of more tooth enamel than with bonding, plus veneers and crowns are more expensive.

If you would like to improve your appearance, talk to us about bonding procedures. We’ll examine your teeth and advise you about the bonding application and the costs involved.
